WFH Changed Everything.
Moving to a full-time WFH situation for the past 5 years dramatically changed how I communicate with my coworkers.
Hallway conversations and coffee shop walk-and-talks have all become Slack conversations. Every meeting? Zoom and chat and email follow ups. Whiteboard sidebars? Figma and Slack. The common element in all of this is that I've gone from an in-office experience of, maybe, 3 or 4 hours per 8 hour day of actual hands on keyboards to a full 8 hours (or more) of hands on keys. As a result I started to get really painful strains in my elbows and shoulders that I've come to learn are Repetitive Strain Injuries.

I invested in a standing desk, dual monitor setup for the home office as well as a fully adjustable Aeron office chair and it helped a bit. Even though I was in the gym 3 or 4 days a week, the elbow and shoulder pain never cleared up and actually got in the way of workouts and cycling. I ended up going to physical therapy once a week for several months to address the RSI issues, and also invested in a new ergo keyboard at my therapist's recommendation.
The tl;dr there was that I'd spent a ton of money fixing everything else in my office for perfect ergonomic alignment EXCEPT for the one thing that my fingers actually touched... the keyboard.
"One keyboard turned into 5 keyboards as I tried literally every combination of keystroke, layout, wrist pad, and ergo key patterns trying to help with the pain."
One keyboard turned into 5 keyboards as I tried literally every combination of keystroke, layout, wrist pad, and ergo key patterns trying to help with the pain. Sometimes I typed in my lap on wireless keyboards and other times all at my desk... but all the while, I'm still spending a full 8 hours each workday using the keyboard to communicate with coworkers.
The pain basically became something I figured I'd just have to live with and modified my workouts to accommodate the issues. I also maxed out my P/T benefits two separate years trying to fix things through therapy, but it really only minimized the symptoms. I also used speech-to-text apps like Diction and Otter to try and limit the time of fingers on keys.
"I started using the Flow keyboard in January of this year"
I started using the Flow keyboard in January of this year, and was immediately struck by how "limited" I'd actually been with my other keyboards in terms of angle/typing finger reach/elevation/wrist alignment. I thought I'd tried everything, and boy was I wrong. With the Flow I am able to adjust every single aspect of my typing experience and can even do so on a daily basis depending on my setting and how my shoulders are feeling. It was almost a tad overwhelming since literally everything could be adjusted... so I just went where my arms and wrists and fingers wanted to lay on the desk on their own. Thanks to the magnetic desk pad, all of my experimentation stays locked perfectly in place even with my hard and fast typing.
The result?
After about a month of using the Flow keyboard I honestly haven't had any pain in my shoulders, elbows, or wrists. It felt a little too good to be true, so I've cycled back in some of my old keyboards at times just to see if the pain came back... and sure enough it did. The Flow keyboard has solved several years' worth of increasing RSI pain and even allowed me to modify my gym workouts back to the way they were prior. I can't speak highly enough of the Flow keyboard and only wish I'd found it sooner.

It is definitely an investment, but when I think about the cost of 5 different keyboards, insurance co-pays on 40+ physical therapy visits, the value in return paid for it many times over. I love this thing and love that I am still experimenting with layouts and adjustments as my body dictates... I'm not locked in to any one pattern or alignment. My shoulders, elbows, and wrists have never been happier and it's honestly a bit shocking how much of an improvement something as seemingly "simple" as a keyboard can make. Huge kudos to the NUIO team on this one, they really nailed the solution in an elegant product!
