A

Actuation Force

The amount of pressure, measured in grams or centinewtons, required to register a keystroke. Lower actuation force reduces finger fatigue during extended typing sessions. Ergonomic keyboards often use carefully tuned actuation force to balance responsiveness with comfort.

Adaptive Keyboard

A keyboard designed to adjust to the user's body rather than forcing the user into a fixed position. Adaptive designs may include split halves, adjustable angles, or repositionable modules. The NUIO Flow Keyboard is an adaptive keyboard that dynamically adjusts to the human form.

Adaptability

The innate human ability to adjust movement patterns to fit any tool or environment, whether sub-optimal or ergonomically ideal. While adaptation to constrained motion can lead to chronic muscle and joint issues, the body can equally adapt to designs that support neutral posture. Creating new muscle memory requires time and repetition, typically ranging from a few sessions to several weeks.

Backlit Keys

Bluetooth Keyboard

C

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

A condition caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand. Prolonged typing on flat, non-ergonomic keyboards is a common contributing factor. Split and ergonomic keyboards can help reduce CTS risk by promoting a neutral wrist position.

Columnar Layout

A key arrangement in which keys are aligned in straight vertical columns rather than staggered rows. Columnar layouts are commonly found on ergonomic and split keyboards.

Concave Keycaps

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

A condition caused by pressure or stretching of the ulnar nerve at the elbow. Typing with arms held at awkward angles or resting elbows on hard surfaces can aggravate this condition. Ergonomic keyboard setups help by allowing more natural arm positioning.

D

De Quervain's Tenosynovitis

Dynamic Positioning

E

Ergonomics

The scientific discipline concerned with designing tools, systems, and environments that fit the human body's capabilities and limitations. In the context of keyboards, ergonomics focuses on reducing musculoskeletal strain, promoting neutral joint positions, and improving comfort during prolonged use.

Extension (Wrist)

Bending the wrist upward so the back of the hand moves toward the forearm. Typing on thick, elevated keyboards without a wrist rest often forces the wrists into extension, which can contribute to repetitive strain injuries over time.

F

Flexion (Wrist)

Bending the wrist downward so the palm moves toward the inner forearm. Sustained wrist flexion while typing increases pressure within the carpal tunnel and is a known risk factor for CTS.

Flow State

A psychological concept developed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describing a mental state of complete immersion and focused engagement in an activity. During flow, a person experiences deep concentration, a sense of effortlessness, and a loss of awareness of time. In a work context, flow state is associated with peak productivity and satisfaction — it typically occurs when the challenge of a task is well-matched to the person's skill level. H

Home Row

The middle row of letter keys where fingers rest in a neutral typing position — typically A, S, D, F for the left hand and J, K, L, ; for the right hand on a QWERTY layout. Hot-Swappable Switches

A keyboard design that allows individual key switches to be removed and replaced without soldering. Hot-swap capability lets users customize the feel and sound of their keyboard to personal preference.

Human Factors

K

Key Travel

The total distance a key moves from its resting position to full depression, typically measured in millimeters. Keyboards with well-tuned key travel balance speed and comfort. Keystroke Durability

A measure of how many key presses a keyboard's switches are rated to withstand before failure, often expressed in millions of keystrokes. The Flow Keyboard's key mechanisms are rated for 5 million keystrokes and strife-tested to 10 million.

L

Low-Profile Keyboard

A keyboard with a slim chassis and shorter key travel distance compared to traditional designs. Low-profile keyboards reduce wrist extension by sitting closer to the desk surface, which can be ergonomically beneficial for many users.

M

Mechanical Keyboard

A keyboard that uses individual mechanical switches under each key rather than a membrane or rubber dome. Mechanical keyboards allow for the customization of each key by swapping out component parts to fit a user's preferences. Mechanical keyboards are larger in size because each key is a stand alone module. Packaging individual modules - rather than integrating the key elements into the product - dictates the size and shape of the product.

Membrane Keyboard

A keyboard that provides tactile feedback during the typing stroke via a flexible membrane layer rather than metal or plastic components used in mechanical key switches. Membrane keyboards are typically thinner and quieter. The feel can be tuned and optimized for both membrane and mechanical - however the parts in a mechanical key can be replaced to provide customization, where the membrane design is optimized to meet certain design criteria and is unchangeable.

Musculoskeletal Disorder (MSD)

An injury or condition affecting muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, or cartilage. In a workplace context, MSDs are often caused or worsened by repetitive motions, sustained awkward postures, and poor ergonomic setups. Ergonomic keyboards are a key intervention for preventing typing-related MSDs.

Motion Paths

The natural trajectories that fingers, hands, and wrists follow when interacting with a device. By studying these movement patterns, designers can determine the optimal size, shape, and position of keys and other interaction points — resulting in layouts that work with the body rather than against it. N

Negative Tilt

A keyboard angle where the back edge sits lower than the front edge, tilting the keyboard slightly away from the user. Negative tilt helps keep the wrists in a neutral or slightly downward position, reducing strain on the tendons through the carpal tunnel.

Neutral Wrist Position

The natural, relaxed alignment of the wrist where it is neither bent up (extended), down (flexed), nor angled to either side (deviated). Maintaining a neutral wrist position while typing is one of the most important ergonomic principles for preventing repetitive strain injuries.

Neuroplasticity

The brain's ability to form and reorganize neural connections in response to new experiences, learning, and practice. When switching to an ergonomic keyboard layout, neuroplasticity is what allows your muscle memory to adapt — the brain builds new pathways as your fingers learn optimized key positions. O

Ortholinear Layout

A keyboard layout where all keys are arranged in a uniform, non-staggered grid. Unlike traditional staggered layouts inherited from typewriter design, ortholinear layouts align keys in straight columns and rows.

P

Palm Rest / Palm Support

A padded surface that sits in front of or is attached to a keyboard, providing support for the palms during typing breaks. Proper palm support helps maintain a neutral wrist position. The NUIO Flow System includes magnetic palm supports that integrate seamlessly with the keyboard.

Pronation

The inward rotation of the forearm so the palm faces downward. Typing on flat keyboards requires sustained forearm pronation, which can fatigue the muscles and contribute to discomfort. Split keyboards with tenting help reduce pronation by allowing the hands to rest at a more natural angle.

Q

QWERTY

The standard keyboard layout used in most English-speaking countries, named after the first six letters in the top row. While alternative layouts like Dvorak and Colemak exist, QWERTY remains dominant. R

Radial Layout

A key arrangement that follows the natural arc and reach of each finger, positioning keys along curved paths rather than in straight rows. Radial layouts allow the fingers to rest in a neutral position when placed on the home row. This reduces the need for the user to conform to the key position, as in many keyboard designs. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

A broad category of injuries to muscles, nerves, and tendons caused by repetitive motion, sustained awkward postures, or forceful exertions. RSI is common among people who type for long periods on poorly designed keyboards. Symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness. Ergonomic input devices are a primary preventive measure.

S

Scissor Key Mechanism

A key mechanism that uses two interlocking plastic pieces that hinge and have a motion resembling scissors. Scissors mechanisms provide stability through the key travel and a vertical motion path. Also, scissor mechanisms have a compact profile which allows for a reduction in the overall height of the keys. They are commonly found in laptop keyboards and low-profile desktop keyboards.

Shoulder Abduction

Moving the arms outward and away from the body. Traditional narrow keyboards can force users to hold their arms close together, causing shoulder tension. A split keyboard allows the halves to be placed at shoulder width, eliminating this strain.

Split Keyboard

A keyboard physically divided into two separate halves — one for each hand. The split design allows users to position each half independently, promoting natural shoulder-width alignment and reducing ulnar deviation. T

Tactile Feedback

The physical sensation a key provides when it is pressed, it signals when the make point is achieved and a keystroke has been registered. Good tactile feedback reduces the need to bottom out keys, which in turn reduces stress on the fingers and forearms and can improve typing speed. Tuning the shape of the force curve allows the designer to provide an enhanced user experience and optimized feel.

Tendinitis

Inflammation or irritation of a tendon, often caused by repetitive movements. Typing on non-ergonomic keyboards can contribute to tendinitis in the fingers, wrists, and forearms. Ergonomic keyboards help by reducing the force and range of motion required for each keystroke.

Tenting

Angling each half of a split keyboard outward so the inner edges are higher than the outer edges, creating a tent-like shape. Tenting reduces forearm pronation and allows the hands to rest at a more anatomically neutral angle, easing strain on the wrists and forearms.

Thumb Cluster

A group of keys positioned within natural reach of the thumb on an ergonomic keyboard. Thumb clusters move frequently used keys — like space, enter, or modifier keys — to the strongest digit, reducing pinky strain and improving efficiency.

U

Ulnar Deviation

The bending of the wrist toward the pinky-finger side. Traditional keyboards force ulnar deviation because the hands must angle inward to reach a single, straight key plane. Over time, this posture constricts the carpal tunnel, reduces blood flow, and strains muscles and tendons. Split keyboards directly address this by allowing each hand to maintain a straight wrist alignment.

W

Wireless Keyboard

A keyboard that connects to a host device without a physical cable, typically via Bluetooth or a USB radio-frequency receiver.
