Updating your Flow Keyboard firmware (macOS)
Requires the NUIO app version 1.2 or later (free on the Mac App Store) and macOS 14.7 or later. Current firmware: Left 01.00.154 · Right 01.00.154. Last updated: September 2026.
Firmware updates keep both halves of your Flow Keyboard in sync and deliver the latest fixes. The whole process takes 10–15 minutes and updates the left half first, then the right.
Before you start
- Charge both halves to at least 20%, or leave the keyboard plugged in during the update.
- Keep your Mac awake and the NUIO app open until the update finishes — don't close the lid.
- Have the keyboard within a few feet of your Mac.
Update the firmware
- Turn on your Flow Keyboard and make sure it's connected to your Mac.
- Install or update the NUIO app from the Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nuio/id6472573124?mt=12 — you need version 1.2 or later (check under NUIO → About NUIO).
- Open the app. If an update is available, you'll see an Update Available badge next to your keyboard. Click Update Now.
- Wait for both halves to finish. The left half updates first (about 8 minutes), then the right (about 5 minutes). Each half restarts when it's done — this is normal. If progress pauses after the left half, press any key on the keyboard to wake it.
- When the app says the update is complete, turn the keyboard off and on, then press a key on each half. The app should show L: 01.00.154 · R: 01.00.154.
That's it for most keyboards. If everything reconnects and the versions match, you're done.
If your keyboard was on firmware 01.00.133 or earlier
Firmware 01.00.133 and earlier used an older Bluetooth layout, and after the update macOS keeps its old record of the keyboard. If the app shows only a right-half version, or keyboard settings don't respond after the update, refresh the record once:
- In the NUIO app, choose Forget Device at the bottom of the keyboard page, then quit the app.
- Open System Settings → Bluetooth. Click the ⓘ next to each Flow Keyboard entry and choose Forget This Device. (If you see several Flow Keyboard entries, forget all of them.)
- Turn the keyboard off and on, and press a key on each half.
- In System Settings → Bluetooth, click Connect next to Flow Keyboard. When macOS shows a six-digit code, type it on the Flow Keyboard and press Return.
- Open the NUIO app. It should show L: 01.00.154 · R: 01.00.154, and settings will work again.
If the keyboard still won't pair or connect — full Bluetooth reset
Only needed in rare cases, usually when several stale Flow Keyboard entries have accumulated.
Before you do this: this reset erases every Bluetooth pairing on your Mac — mouse, trackpad, AirPods, everything — and restarts your Mac immediately. Save your work. If your mouse or trackpad is Bluetooth-only, keep its charging cable handy: plugging it in reconnects it instantly after the restart. Do the steps below while the Flow Keyboard is still connected, so you can type them on it.
- Press Command–Space, type Terminal, and press Return.
- Paste the following line into the Terminal window and press Return:
sudo pkill bluetoothd; sudo rm -f /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist; sudo reboot
- Type your Mac login password when asked — nothing appears while you type, that's normal — and press Return. Your Mac restarts.
- After the restart, turn the keyboard off and on, press a key on each half, then pair it in System Settings → Bluetooth (type the six-digit code on the Flow Keyboard). Reconnect your other Bluetooth devices the same way, or by plugging them in.
- Open the NUIO app and confirm L: 01.00.154 · R: 01.00.154.
